Why Beam?

BookSmart and Biz Synergy have combined forces to create Beam Bookkeeping. Where people-first policies, optimistic attitudes and years of experience combine to help business owners of all sizes achieve balance in their lives, and in their books.

While things are Beaming along in the background, and as we welcome new team members from each of the organisations, we wanted to start wearing our new dress (or pants) and sharing this with you.

We may look a little different now, but we can assure you we’re the same dream team Beaming along to deliver the unmatched service and quality our two Hunter businesses have been providing for many years, with many more to come.

Beam Team

The Beam Team is an incredible group made up of a wide and dynamic set of skills and experience.  Spread across several offices they are lead by the management of Katie and Deb.

Debbie Mirisch


Deb is a legend with over 25 years’ experience in accounting. Her passion is in helping business owners streamline the financial side of their business. Deb is a registered BAS Agent, Certified Xero Advisor and a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers…in other words, she is an absolute expert and nerd when it comes to numbers. Deb also believes in bookkeeping with a smile – happy books make a happy Deb.

Deb holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is a member of the Maitland Business Chamber. She joined the board of Directors of the Mutual Bank in 2020 and became Chair of their Audit Committee in 2021.  She also served three years as a Director and Honorary Secretary of local not-for-profit NDIS registered provider, The Mai-Wel Group, retiring from this position on 30th June 2021. Deb is treasurer of the Maitland Black & White Committee, whom raise sizeable funds for the vision impaired of the Hunter Region in partnership with Vision Australia.

When she isn’t balancing books, you can find her spending quality time with her beautiful family, gardening, cooking or reading (probably a book about numbers).

Katie McCool

Managing Director

When it comes to understanding business strategy and operations – Katie has it balanced. Her passion for business and industry started at a young age, securing a top 5% result in her year 12 Business Studies exams. From there, Katie was offered a key role with a national imports company at age 19 (while still studying), where she climbed the corporate ladder to the corner office of CEO. Katie returned to the Hunter to start her family and since took on operations roles in the fashion industry and the health sector. Katie is a firm believer in creating positive workplaces to build balanced and thriving businesses. She has a keen eye for detail and is a stickler for ethical practice. Katie keeps the balance with a smile.

Katie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Newcastle and continues her knack for creating more positive and productive workplaces by up-skilling and training.

Katie is a Certified Xero Advisor and Is also Xero Payroll Certified. Not to mention, she is also Member of the Australian Bookkeepers Network, Receiptbank/Dext Champion Certified since 2015.

When she’s not balancing books, Katie can be found further contributing to her local community as the Vice President of the P&F Association for her local school and was also the previous Secretary and Vice President of Kotara South Netball Club for 4 years. She continues to be actively involved in sporting clubs throughout the Hunter as a player, manager and coach.

Katie enjoys spending her spare time (when she has it) with her family and friends at the beach, sometimes with a delicious cocktail in hand. She’s loves nothing more than hooking up the caravan and getting in a little holiday where she can.
